The Full Intermediate Curriculum
The full Intermediate English Forward Curriculum includes 29 lessons across 6 units for a total of 50 to 80 hours of instruction for intermediate-level ESL students on real-life topics and situations language learners face every day, from going to the doctor to getting a job and more.

Along with each unit’s lesson plans, links for “Supplemental Materials” are supplied below that contain corresponding items for lessons like scenario cards, pictures, sentence strips, Can-Do lists, and Teacher Reflections. Please refer to the Instructor’s Guide at the bottom of this page for information on the English Forward lesson flow, teaching strategies, theoretical principles, and more.
Unit 1: Survival Skills
The Survival Skills Unit consists of lessons that have been adapted from their original versions in the Beginning English Forward Curriculum to a higher level. They are appropriate for students who fall into the low/high intermediate NRS levels, or BEST Plus 4-5.
Unit 2: Everyday Living
Intermediate Unit 2 introduces students to English needed for everyday situations such as asking for and giving directions, making offers and invitations, and introducing others.
Unit 3: Finances & Common Agreements
Intermediate Unit 3 deals with common topics in finance and agreements that we come into contact with in everyday life, like reading utility bills, credit cards, and understanding rental agreements.
Unit 4: Healthy Living
Intermediate Unit 4 covers topics essential to staying healthy, preventive care, going to the doctor, and reading medicine labels.
Unit 5: English For Work
Intermediate Unit 5 covers important information for looking for and succeeding at work in the United States.
Unit 6: Education
Intermediate Unit 6 prepares students for enrolling themselves or their children in school and exploring opportunities to further their education in their community.
Becoming a US Citizen
The Intermediate Lesson Becoming a US Citizen provides an introduction to the process of becoming a citizen along with activities for further practice.
